When people learn that my professional career was in linguistics, their first question is "How many languages do you know?" If I'm feeling feisty, I may reply that I know there are over 6500 languages in the world. If I'm feeling pedantic, I'll ask them what they mean by "know." If I'm being scholarly, I might say I'm a native speaker of English (American, Midwestern variety) and have a professional working ability in Indonesian. My undergraduate Latin, German, Koine Greek, and Hebrew, along with my smattering of Spanish should not be counted as languages I speak.
All that to say: enjoy my take on language ability in the form of this week's crossword. Click here to print the puzzle or the solution or solve the puzzle online at crossword.info/drpete
